How long should a Pomodoro be? 25, 50 or 90 minutes
The classic Pomodoro is 25 minutes of focus and 5 minutes of rest. It is a good default, not a rule. The right length depends on the task, your energy and how easily you get distracted.
The common rhythms
- 25 / 5 (classic). Short enough that starting feels easy. Good for beginners, for tasks you are avoiding, and for work that tires you quickly.
- 50 / 10. A popular middle ground for writing, coding, design or any task where it takes you a while to get into the flow.
- 52 / 17. A rhythm some people use after seeing it mentioned in productivity circles. Treat it as an experiment rather than a proven formula.
- 90 / 20. Long deep-work blocks, often used by people who already concentrate well for long stretches. It suits focused, creative work. It is hard to keep up when you are tired or interrupted.
How to find your length
- Start with 25 minutes for a week.
- Notice what happens in the last five minutes of a block. If you are fully absorbed and annoyed when the timer rings, try 40 or 50 minutes.
- If your mind wanders well before the timer rings, or you feel dread when you start, shorten the block to 15 or 20 minutes.
- Keep the break at roughly a fifth of the focus time, and use a longer break after a few blocks.
Match the length to the task
- Tasks you dread: go short. Fifteen minutes is enough to get past the starting barrier.
- Admin and email: 25 minutes is usually plenty.
- Writing, coding, design: try 40 to 50 minutes.
- Studying new material: 25 to 40 minutes, with a test-yourself block afterwards.
Signs your blocks are the wrong length
- You keep stopping early or checking the clock, so the block is probably too long for that task today.
- You always want to continue after the timer, so the block may be too short for that task.
- You are exhausted after one or two blocks. Shorten them, or take a longer break and eat or move.
Whatever you choose, keep the rest. Longer blocks need real breaks just as much as short ones.
Switch rhythms in one tap. Dogodoro has presets for 25/5, 50/10, 52/17 and 90/20 in Settings, and you can set any length you like.
